Pass Strong AI Regulation Before It's Too Late

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

May 26

Pass meaningful AI regulation now. A handful of private companies currently control technology powerful enough to reshape warfare, labor, and democracy — with no independent oversight and no legal accountability. That has to change. Pope Leo XIV's encyclical 'Magnifica Humanitas' puts it plainly: "technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise, finance, regulate, and use it." When AI is already being deployed in active military conflicts like the U.S.-Israel War on Iran, Congress cannot keep treating this as a future problem. The Pope called specifically for "robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility." That last phrase is directed at you. This isn't a fringe position. It's now a moral benchmark endorsed by one of the world's most influential institutions, presented alongside leaders from the AI industry itself. The window to shape this technology in the public interest is closing fast. Act on AI regulation this session.
