I'm worried that Pete Hegseth might not have the skills or the right attitude to run the Department of Defense. Stories about his behavior, including heavy drinking and inappropriate relationships, along with his inability to manage a large organization, make him a bad choice for the job. What really concerns me is the department he’s supposed to lead. If Mr. Hegseth were in charge of a department like Interior or Agriculture, his character and skills (or lack of them) wouldn’t matter as much. But running the Department of Defense takes someone who can handle serious crises and make smart decisions. As a member of the Armed Forces Committee, I hope you use your time to question Mr. Hegseth about this. Make sure he understands how important his role would be and tell him that his past behavior is not acceptable for someone leading our nation’s defense.
