Oppose Any Efforts to Acquire Greenland

To: Rep. Dailey-Provost, Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Plumb, Gov. Cox, Pres. Trump, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

January 20

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose any efforts by President Trump to acquire Greenland and to use your position to prevent actions that could destabilize our NATO alliance. Trump recently refused to rule out military or economic coercion to take control of Greenland, responding ominously with "You'll find out" when asked how far he would go. He dismissed concerns about breaking up NATO, despite the fact that Denmark, our ally and Greenland's governing nation, has clearly opposed any annexation. The Greenlandic people themselves have repeatedly stated their opposition to U.S. control. This pursuit is unnecessary and dangerous. The United States already maintains Pituffik Space Base in Greenland under our existing agreement with Denmark, providing all the strategic military presence we need in the Arctic region. We do not need to own Greenland to protect our national security interests there. What we do need is to maintain the trust and cooperation of our NATO allies, which this reckless rhetoric actively undermines. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of a "rupture" in the global order caused by U.S. policies, stating that "great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion." He declared that the bargain of American hegemony "no longer works." These are the words of our closest ally, reflecting growing international alarm at the current administration's approach. I need you to stand firmly against any legislative authorization, funding, or tacit approval for efforts to acquire Greenland through coercion. Our alliances make us stronger and safer. Threatening a NATO ally over territory that provides us no additional strategic benefit is both morally wrong and strategically foolish. Please make your opposition clear and work with colleagues to ensure Congress serves as a check on actions that would damage our standing in the world.
