An Open Letter

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Swalwell, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Livermore, CA

April 6

I’m writing as your constituent because I’m alarmed by something that shouldn’t happen in this country: The head of the FCC just threatened to take away broadcast licenses from news organizations that don’t cover the Iran war the way the Trump administration wants. That’s the government telling the press what it’s allowed to report. That’s not how a democracy works. This isn’t coming out of nowhere. Over the past year we’ve watched news outlets cancel shows, pull segments, and soften their coverage under pressure from this administration. FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s threat is the next step — from pressure to outright punishment. I’m asking you to: 1. Publicly call out Carr’s threat for what it is: unconstitutional and un-American. 2. Support articles of impeachment against Carr. Public pressure has worked before — it likely played a role in Trump firing Kristi Noem. Congress needs to make clear this behavior has consequences. 3. Use your oversight authority to investigate how the FCC is treating news organizations. A free press exists so the public can know what their government is doing. Please stand up for it.
