PBS and NPR serve as vital sources of unbiased news, educational programming, and entertainment for millions of Americans. Their modest budgets, largely funded by viewer contributions, provide tremendous value compared to their operational costs. Commercial media conglomerates cannot replicate the public service mission of these nonprofit organizations. Cutting funding would deprive many communities, especially in rural and underserved areas, of their only reliable sources of local journalism and emergency information. Furthermore, attempts to replace public broadcasting with state media or fully privatized outlets risk compromising journalistic integrity and public interest obligations. Rather than defunding, these irreplaceable civic resources deserve increased support to sustain their invaluable services for all Americans.
