As your constituent, I am demanding immediate action to protect the integrity of the 2026 election.
President Trump has removed the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, the independent bipartisan agency Congress created after the 2000 election to help states administer secure elections, certify voting systems, distribute federal election funding, and maintain the national voter registration form. With every commissioner gone, the agency is effectively unable to carry out many of its official responsibilities until new commissioners are nominated and confirmed by the Senate.
Whether intentional or not, with these actions this administration is dismantling independent election oversight just as the 2026 midterm election is underway. Americans have every right to question why an independent election commission is being sidelined at such a critical moment.
Congress created the Election Assistance Commission to strengthen confidence in our elections. Now it has been rendered inoperable through political maneuvering. If the executive branch can simply eliminate independent oversight whenever it becomes inconvenient, then the checks and balances our democracy depends upon are in serious jeopardy.
I expect you to conduct immediate oversight hearings, demand a full public explanation for these removals, and move without delay to ensure the Commission is restored with qualified, bipartisan commissioners as required by law. The American people deserve transparent, secure, and independent election administration.
Our democracy depends not only on free and fair elections, but on public confidence that those elections are administered without political interference. Every member of Congress swore an oath to defend the Constitution. Now is the time to prove that oath means something.
History will remember who defended our democracy—and who stood by while public trust was eroded through these actions.
