demand full transparency re: senator mitch mcconnell

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

July 11

Dear Senator, I am writing to urge you to publicly lead the effort to demand full transparency regarding Senator Mitch McConnell's condition and, if he is no longer capable of fulfilling the duties of office, to call for the appropriate steps to ensure the people of Kentucky have active representation, including advocating for a special election if the seat becomes vacant. The prolonged lack of meaningful information surrounding Senator McConnell's hospitalization is unacceptable. For weeks, the public has received little more than carefully worded statements that he is "improving," while media reports and public speculation have only intensified because of the absence of clear, factual information. Every American deserves honesty from those entrusted with governing. While personal medical details are private, a sitting United States Senator's ability to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the office is a matter of legitimate public concern. Voters have a right to know whether one of the nation's lawmakers is capable of representing the people and participating in the work of Congress. Our democracy cannot function on vague assurances and public relations statements. Congressional leadership should insist on a clear, truthful update regarding Senator McConnell's capacity to serve. If he is unable to fulfill the obligations of his office, there should be a transparent process to ensure the people of Kentucky are fully represented without unnecessary delay. I am asking you not to remain silent. Please publicly demand accountability, call for complete transparency regarding Senator McConnell's ability to serve, and, if circumstances warrant, advocate for a special election so that Kentucky's citizens are represented by someone who is able to carry out the full responsibilities of the office. This is bigger than one senator or one political party. It is about preserving public trust in our democratic institutions and ensuring that every elected official entrusted with legislative power is accountable to the people they serve. I look forward to seeing you take a public leadership role on this issue.
