Immediate Action Required: Treasury Security Failures Endangered Americans’ Data

I am writing to express serious concern about the recent Government Accountability Office findings regarding the Treasury Department’s handling of sensitive financial systems.
According to the GAO, Treasury failed to follow basic security controls when granting access to federal payment systems to a member of the Department of Government Efficiency team. This individual was reportedly able to view, copy, and print sensitive financial data and even had visibility into source code. Even more troubling, this access was granted without completing required security training or agreeing to standard IT security rules.
The GAO also found that this individual was inadvertently given elevated permissions that could have allowed them to modify or delete data within at least one system. While no evidence of changes was found, the fact that such access was even possible represents a significant breakdown in safeguards protecting critical government infrastructure.
These systems handle payments that millions of Americans rely on, including federal benefits and other essential services. Weak oversight and failure to enforce basic security protocols put both taxpayer data and public trust at risk.
I urge you to demand accountability for these failures and to support stronger enforcement of cybersecurity and access controls across all federal agencies. Oversight must be more than reactive. It must ensure that no individual or outside entity is granted access to sensitive government systems without strict adherence to established security standards.
The American people deserve confidence that their data and their tax dollars are being protected with the highest level of care.
I expect your office to take this matter seriously and to push for meaningful corrective action.
