Protect Children from Book Bans
To: Rep. Vieira, Sen. Moran
From: A constituent in Pocasset, MA
November 6, 2024
Based on the provided context, book bans across the United States have seen a sharp rise since 2020, with over 4,000 books banned in schools and public libraries. These bans disproportionately target works about LGBTQ+ communities, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Such bans violate students' First Amendment rights to access information and a quality education. Book bans do not protect children but rather censor important perspectives and experiences. As a constituent, I urge you to oppose any legislation that limits the availability of books in our public libraries and schools or imposes financial burdens on these institutions for book challenges. Such legislation is an attack on our freedom to read and prevents educators and librarians from fulfilling their professional roles. Children deserve access to diverse viewpoints and stories, not censorship. Protect our freedom to read by rejecting oppressive book banning measures.
