I need you to support robust job retraining programs and stronger regulations on AI deployment to protect American workers from mass displacement.
A comprehensive study by the Forecasting Research Institute and Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago found that leading economists predict AI could drive labor force participation down to 55% by 2050 in a rapid progress scenario, equivalent to 10 million jobs lost. We haven't seen participation rates that low since the 1960s. The Congressional Budget Office projects 62.2% participation in 2050, but AI could push us seven points below that.
Job retraining programs received the highest support from economists at 71.8%, and they predict such programs would add 2.76 million workers back into the labor force while boosting GDP growth by 0.2 percentage points. Yet economists give these programs only a 10% chance of being implemented. That's unacceptable.
We need federal investment in retraining now, before displacement accelerates. We also need regulations that slow AI adoption in critical sectors until workers can transition. The wealth concentration forecasts are alarming: 80% of national wealth held by the richest 10% by 2050. Without action, AI will devastate working families while enriching a tiny elite.
