I am writing to urge you to support impeachment proceedings against President Trump for actions that fundamentally betray our longstanding European allies and undermine American national security interests.
Over the weekend, President Trump sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere threatening that he "no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of Peace" because Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize. This letter reveals a dangerous conflation of personal grievances with national policy. The Nobel Committee operates independently of the Norwegian government, a fact Prime Minister Stoere has repeatedly explained to Trump, yet the President continues to punish an entire nation for a perceived personal slight.
On Saturday, Trump announced a 10% tariff on eight European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1. These tariffs will increase to 25% in June and remain until the U.S. takes control of Greenland. This action directly targets nations that have deployed military personnel to Greenland and represents retaliation against our NATO allies for refusing to cede sovereign territory.
Trump's letter to Prime Minister Stoere declared that "The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland," dismissing Denmark's legitimate sovereignty by claiming "There are no written documents; it's only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago." This reasoning could justify territorial aggression against any nation and mirrors the expansionist rhetoric of authoritarian regimes we claim to oppose.
Using the presidency to pursue personal vendettas against allied democracies while threatening their economic stability constitutes a betrayal of the oath of office. These actions damage decades of transatlantic cooperation and embolden adversaries who benefit from Western division. I urge you to support impeachment proceedings to hold the President accountable for prioritizing personal grievances over national interests and allied relationships.
