I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent in Columbus, Ohio, to urge you to use your oversight authority to oppose the proposed merger between Nexstar Media Group and TEGNA.
Our antitrust and media ownership laws exist for a vital reason: to ensure that no single entity holds a monopoly over the information reaching the American public. In Columbus, we rely on stations like WCMH-TV (NBC4) for local news that reflects our specific community. When massive media conglomerates swallow up local stations, the result is often a reduction in local staff, a "cookie-cutter" approach to news, and the dissemination of centralized political rhetoric that does not reflect the diversity of our district.
A healthy democracy requires a diverse media landscape, not a consolidated platform used to broadcast partisan misinformation or talking points under the guise of local reporting. Consolidating power in the hands of a few corporate giants stifles competition, hurts local journalism, and leaves citizens less informed.
I ask that you contact the FCC and the Department of Justice to express your opposition to this merger. Please stand up for the integrity of our local airwaves and ensure that American media serves the public interest, not just corporate and partisan agendas.
