Opposition to Proposed 10% Cuts to Civilian Agencies in FY2027 Budget

April 6

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the administration’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget, which would cut funding to civilian federal agencies by approximately 10 percent, or roughly $73 billion. While I understand the need for fiscal responsibility, this proposal makes deeply concerning choices about national priorities. The budget significantly increases defense spending by approximately 44 percent while reducing funding for the very agencies that support public health, scientific research, environmental protection, housing, and small business development. These cuts are not minor adjustments. They include drastic reductions of more than 50 percent for agencies like the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as sweeping reductions and eliminations of programs that millions of Americans rely on. These agencies are not wasteful as some claim. They fund critical research, protect clean air and water, support innovation, and provide services that directly impact everyday Americans. Slashing their budgets risks long term harm to our economy, public safety, and global competitiveness. I am also concerned about the broader pattern this budget reflects, shifting resources away from domestic investment and toward militarization while simultaneously proposing cuts, restructuring, and workforce reductions across civilian agencies. This approach weakens the federal government’s ability to effectively serve the public. Congress has a constitutional responsibility to review and shape the federal budget. I urge you to reject these disproportionate cuts to civilian agencies and instead advocate for a balanced approach that protects essential programs, invests in the American people, and ensures long term stability. Please speak out against these proposed cuts and work to ensure that the final budget reflects the needs of your constituents and the country as a whole.
