Extend ACA Premium Tax Credits to Prevent Coverage Loss for Millions

February 8

I am writing to urge you to extend the Affordable Care Act Premium Tax Credits beyond their December 2025 expiration date. Without congressional action, over 4 million Americans will lose health insurance coverage by 2034, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. The 2021 American Rescue Plan Act increased these tax credits and made health insurance significantly more affordable for millions of families. However, the recent budget reconciliation bill failed to extend funding for these credits, putting coverage at risk for constituents in our district and across the country. If the credits expire as scheduled, ACA plan premiums are projected to increase by 75% starting in January 2026. This dramatic spike will force many families to choose between paying for health insurance and meeting other basic needs. The math is straightforward. When premiums become unaffordable, people drop coverage. The CBO projects 4.2 million people will lose insurance by 2034 if we allow these credits to lapse. These are not abstract numbers but real families who will face financial hardship from medical bills or delay necessary care because they cannot afford insurance. ACA plans currently provide affordable coverage to millions of Americans, including many in our community. Extending the tax credits is essential to maintaining this access. I understand budget constraints exist, but the cost of inaction is measured in lives disrupted and families facing medical bankruptcy. I am asking you to support legislation that extends ACA Premium Tax Credits beyond 2025. This is not a partisan issue but a practical matter of ensuring constituents can access affordable health insurance. Time is limited, as families need certainty about their 2026 coverage options well before open enrollment begins. Please prioritize this extension and communicate your position on this critical issue. Millions of Americans are counting on Congress to act before the deadline.
