House Resolution 284 needs to come to the floor for a vote now. A two-year independent investigation has documented sexual abuse by Jeffrey Epstein against two students at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2003, five years before his first criminal conviction. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff says he can't act without a victim filing a complaint. The prosecutor's office is still reviewing the report. That leaves a bipartisan House select committee with subpoena power as the only viable path to accountability, and Speaker Matt Hall is blocking it.
The Sanghavi Law Office conducted roughly 180 interviews and documented about 70 first-hand accounts of abuse involving 47 adults connected to Interlochen, spanning six decades. One of Epstein's alleged victims testified at Ghislaine Maxwell's 2021 criminal trial. A parent reportedly warned the school about Epstein's predatory behavior and was ignored. Interlochen twice claimed it found no records of misconduct involving Epstein. That claim is now shattered. The survivors who came forward deserve more than a counseling fund and an apology letter from the board. Force a vote on HR 284.
