To Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Judith Zaffirini, and Lulu Flores, I am writing to urge Texas leaders to address the growing crisis of unaffordable veterinary and pet care costs across our state. For many Texas families, pets are not luxuries — they are beloved family members, companions, and emotional support systems. Yet too many people are being forced to surrender or euthanize their pets simply because they cannot afford treatment. Veterinary care costs have risen dramatically, while access to affordable care remains limited. Independent veterinarians often face high supply and medication costs and may not have access to the same wholesale pricing or financial support available in other areas of healthcare. This creates a situation where both pet owners and veterinary clinics struggle. Texas should explore solutions that make pet care more accessible and affordable, including: * Expanding low-cost veterinary assistance programs * Supporting nonprofit and community veterinary clinics * Increasing access to affordable medications and preventive care * Exploring grants, subsidies, or tax incentives for veterinary providers serving low-income communities * Encouraging partnerships between animal shelters, rescues, and local veterinary services Preventive care and early treatment are far less costly than emergency care or shelter overcrowding. Addressing this issue would help reduce animal suffering, decrease abandonment rates, and support responsible pet ownership across Texas. No family should have to choose between paying rent, buying groceries, or saving the life of a beloved pet. I respectfully ask you to consider meaningful pet care reform during future legislative sessions and to advocate for solutions that protect both Texas families and the animals they love.
