Stop ICE indiscriminately abducting non-criminals

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Van Duyne

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

June 16

I urge you to use your power to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers from indiscriminately abducting non-criminals from their places of work and court appointments. This administration promised to round up and deport dangerous criminals. Instead, fewer than 10% of those abducted have criminal records. The percentage of those with violent criminal records is lower than that. These are farm workers, landscapers, construction workers, and restaurant staff. Many are in the country legally. Many are in the process of working with Immigration to become legal immigrants. Most are making valuable contributions to our society, and working within the law to do so. Abducting them from their workplaces does not make the country safer. Abducting them instead of dangerous criminals makes the country more dangerous. If they’re freeloaders, why is ICE abducting them from their places of employment? If they’re not following our laws, why is ICE abducting them when they report for their legally-required court appearances? Abducting them and sending them to detention centers without due process is a gross violation of the Constitution and our democratic principles. It undermines the integrity of our justice system and contradicts America’s longstanding commitment to human rights and dignity. My wife and I urge you to publicly oppose these ICE raids and call for an immediate moratorium on these operations. We also urge you to advocate for increased oversight of DHS and ICE practices to ensure transparency and accountability.
