The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant operated as a uranium enrichment facility from 1952 to 2013, contaminating the site and surrounding areas with trichloroethylene (TCE), technetium-99, and other pollutants. Although enrichment operations have ceased, significant remediation efforts are still required to address the environmental damage caused over decades of operation. Given the harmful impacts on groundwater quality and public health risks from radioactive and chemical contamination, reopening this facility would be extremely unwise. Kentucky's natural resources and communities deserve protection from further insult. The Department of Energy should allocate full funding to complete comprehensive decontamination and ecological restoration at the site, preventing any future uranium enrichment activities that could compound existing pollution problems. Responsible stewardship of this legacy site must take precedence over any plans for its reactivation.
