NO to the SAVE act

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Levin

From: A constituent in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

January 20

Vote no on the SAVE act. NOT AN EXAGGERATION, this act will not only impede democracy but penalize an undeniable percentage of honest American citizens! If passed, it would disproportionately harm young and older voters, naturalized citizens, voters of color, and voters with low-incomes—those least likely to have easy access to or resources to obtain documents like passports or birth certificates. Getting an unexpected delay in shipping your updated information or being even slightly out of the loop about which documents are needed - going back to touch on just two of the barriers young people and seniors face - ALREADY costs our nation thousands in voter participation a year. This new legislation, in practice, gives citizens who are busy at work in their careers and families one more hurdle to accessing their constitutional right to vote. That’s not even mentioning the technical aspect ! We have already seen the damage these policies cause. In Kansas, a similar law blocked over 35,000 eligible voters from registering before it was struck down as unconstitutional. Those people did not deserve that! Now imagine that fundamental American right to choose your leader is now denied to closer to 20 MILLION American citizens who simply don’t have easy access to their own information. That’s the possibility this law offers - and any good citizen would oppose it. This bill is not about protecting elections—it’s about silencing voters. It’s an obvious (and insulting) attempt to exclude anyone who does not have all their government documents neatly in a line on their bedside table and the resources to update them regularly. Federal law ALREADY prohibits noncitizens from voting, and states have systems in place to enforce this. The SAVE Act would create unnecessary hurdles, push voters off the rolls, and burden election officials at a time when resources are already stretched thin.
