URGENT CONCER: Safeguarding Public Health and Safety

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet, Rep. DeGette

From: A constituent in Denver, CO

January 23, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern as a nurse and dedicated healthcare professional regarding recent executive actions that restrict federal health agencies from communicating vital information to the public. On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing federal health agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to halt all external communications without prior approval from political appointees. This unprecedented directive encompasses health advisories, scientific reports, website updates, and social media posts, effectively silencing the agencies responsible for safeguarding public health. The pause is currently in effect through February 1, 2025, and includes critical publications such as the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Additionally, President Trump has signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), a move that public health experts warn could hinder access to global health data and impede responses to health threats. In my role as a nurse, I witness firsthand how access to timely, accurate information saves lives. Transparency and effective communication from agencies such as the CDC, FDA, and WHO are essential to preventing disease outbreaks, managing emergencies, and ensuring public trust in our health systems. Limiting their ability to provide guidance undermines public health efforts and leaves our nation vulnerable to preventable risks. As a member of Congress, you play a pivotal role in ensuring that these agencies can carry out their missions effectively. I urge you to oppose any measures that restrict their communication with the public and to advocate for policies that prioritize public health, safety, and access to reliable information. Our nation relies on these agencies to keep us safe, and their expertise should not be politicized. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter, and I hope to see your continued support for protecting the health and safety of all Americans.
