An Open Letter

To: Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley

From: A constituent in Prairie City, OR

January 27

Appropiations Bill I am writing to urge you to stand firm and not support funding the government under the current conditions. We are well beyond the point where “finding common ground” with today’s GOP is realistic. Congressional Republicans have consistently enabled and defended unconstitutional behavior by the President, including open defiance of the rule of law. Democratic compromises to date have not moderated this behavior in any meaningful way. At this moment, refusing to normalize or accommodate unconstitutional governance is not extremism—it is a necessary defense of democratic institutions. Holding the line is difficult, but continued compromise in the face of bad faith only accelerates the erosion of constitutional norms. I urge you to remain steadfast and remember that the Bill of Rights were the result of fighting the power, not caving
