SB1166 represents a concerning infringement on the rights and well-being of transgender students in Arizona's public schools. The requirement for parental notification when school staff use affirming names and pronouns disregards the privacy and safety concerns many transgender youth face. Allowing staff exemptions on religious grounds enables discriminatory practices that undermine supportive learning environments for these vulnerable students. Protecting all students' dignity and creating an inclusive school climate should be prioritized over provisions that enable marginalization. Urgent action is needed to safeguard the rights of Arizona's transgender students and ensure their access to an affirming and supportive education experience.
