America Will Have No Kings
To: Rep. Houchin, Sen. Banks, Sen. Young
From: A constituent in Bloomington, IN
February 2
The United States was founded on the rejection of monarchy, built instead on a system of checks and balances designed to prevent any one person from wielding too much power. The Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution specifically to ensure that no president could rule like a king, subject to the same laws as any citizen and accountable to the people. Yet, in recent years, we have seen a troubling trend that threatens these foundational principles. Donald Trump has repeatedly sought to consolidate power, undermining the institutions meant to check his authority and disregarding the democratic norms that uphold our republic. A prime example of this power grab has been his illegal purging of civil servants—career officials who are supposed to remain independent of political influence. By removing those who do not show personal loyalty to him rather than loyalty to the Constitution, Trump has eroded the integrity of our government. These firings are not just political maneuvers; they are direct attacks on the rule of law and an attempt to replace public servants with those who will serve his personal interests over the nation’s. This behavior is unacceptable in a democracy. Congress, as the legislative branch, must act as the last line of defense against authoritarian overreach. It has both the duty and the authority to check the executive branch, ensuring that no president—Republican or Democrat—can act above the law. If Congress fails to act, we risk further erosion of our democratic institutions and the very principles that make the United States a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Order must be restored, and those who defy the Constitution must be held accountable. The people you serve demand a government that protects their freedom, dignity, and fundamental rights—access to healthcare, free and fair elections, and a system that upholds the rule of law. The Constitution is not a suggestion; it is the bedrock of our democracy, and it is your sworn duty to defend it. The current president has shown blatant disregard for our institutions, consolidating power in a manner that threatens the very foundation of our republic. You cannot remain silent or complicit in the face of this authoritarian overreach. We call on you to take immediate action—stand by the Constitution, respect the rule of law, and uphold your oath of office. It is time to pursue impeachment and removal from office. History is watching, and the people will not forget who chose democracy over dictatorship.
