The SAVE Act would create significant barriers for millions of eligible American voters by requiring documentary proof of citizenship like a passport or birth certificate just to register or re-register to vote. According to the Brennan Center's research, over 21 million citizens lack these documents readily available. For many, obtaining them would entail substantial costs and logistical burdens, especially for those living in remote areas far from election offices. Rather than bolstering confidence, imposing these onerous requirements risks undermining faith in elections that are already secure and well-run. I urge you to reject this unnecessary measure that would disenfranchise millions and make voting less accessible. Protecting the rights of all eligible citizens to freely participate in our democracy should be the top priority.
