Uphold independence of Library of Congress, restore nonpartisan leadership

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Rivas, Sen. Padilla

May 14

The recent removal of the Librarian of Congress and installation of an unqualified acting replacement is an egregious overreach of executive power that undermines the independence of this crucial institution. The Library of Congress serves as the preeminent research library in the world and custodian of the nation's intellectual record. Allowing a partisan political appointee lacking relevant experience to oversee its operations jeopardizes its integrity and nonpartisan mission. This flagrant violation of established norms and procedures governing the Library's leadership must be swiftly rectified through congressional oversight and legal challenges if necessary. The American people depend on the Library to preserve knowledge and promote the free exchange of ideas – core democratic values that are now under threat. Immediate action is imperative to uphold the rule of law, protect this venerable institution from further politicization, and ensure the Library can continue fulfilling its vital role undisturbed by partisan agendas.
