The SAVE Act poses a grave threat to voting rights for millions of eligible American voters, particularly women, people of color, young voters, and marginalized communities. This draconian legislation would erect insurmountable barriers to voter registration by requiring all potential voters to present proof of citizenship documents like passports or birth certificates in person. This would destroy the most accessible methods of registering, including online, by mail, at voter registration drives, or when updating a driver's license. Credible research indicates over 21 million Americans lack easy access to such documents, effectively disenfranchising them. Moreover, the SAVE Act would disproportionately impact married women who changed their names, transgender individuals struggling to update identity documents, and other vulnerable groups. Experts agree there are already robust safeguards against non-citizen voting, rendering this law an outright voter suppression tactic cloaked in false "election integrity" rhetoric. We must reject this dangerous overreach that undermines our most fundamental democratic rights and processes. I urge you to vigorously oppose the SAVE Act and instead champion policies that protect and expand access to the ballot for all eligible citizens.
