Legislate strict data privacy and security standards with penalties

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Self, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Frisco, TX

July 27

Legislate strict data privacy protections for consumer tech companies. The Tea app was created to help women safely vet potential dating matches, but a recent data breach exposed sensitive personal information like selfies and IDs from over 72,000 users. This breach highlights the risks of companies collecting and retaining user data without adequate security measures in place. Users entrusted Tea with their personal information under the expectation it would be properly safeguarded. However, Tea failed in its responsibility to protect this data, violating users' privacy. We urge you to support legislation that holds companies and organizations accountable when they fail to implement reasonable data protection standards. Entities should only collect data that is truly necessary for their services and delete it once no longer needed. There must be consequences for careless handling of personal data to incentivize better security practices across industries. Users' privacy rights must be prioritized over conveniences or profits. Please take action to prevent breaches like this from reoccurring and ensure companies properly value the data entrusted to them.
