Oppose Cuts to Lifesaving Disability and Elder Support Programs

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Vargas, Sen. Padilla

From: A verified voter in San Diego, CA

April 25

I am writing as a constituent and a concerned citizen to urge you to oppose any proposed cuts to federal programs that protect the health, safety, and rights of people with disabilities and older adults. There is currently a proposal circulating in Washington, DC that would drastically reduce funding for essential programs such as the Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agencies, the Councils on Developmental Disabilities, the University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs), and Long-term Care Ombudsman programs. These programs serve as critical lifelines for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Slashing these funds would not only endanger individuals by increasing the risk of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation, but also undermine decades of progress toward independence and dignity for people with disabilities and aging adults. These programs empower individuals to live in their communities, advocate for themselves, and maintain autonomy—values that should be central to our society. Without these protections, we risk returning to a time when people with disabilities and the elderly were marginalized, institutionalized, and considered burdens instead of valued members of society. These programs save lives. I urge you to protect the future of these vital supports and vote against any legislation that seeks to reduce their funding. Your leadership on this issue will directly impact the well-being of countless individuals and families across our state. Thank you for your time and your service to our community.
