I’m writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to oppose any use or endorsement of the Insurrection Act or the Alien Enemies Act for immigration enforcement, as proposed by President Trump’s recent executive orders.
These actions are not just extreme — they are un-American.
The idea of using the U.S. military against civilians, detaining and deporting people without due process, and labeling immigrants as “enemies” sets a deeply dangerous precedent. It weaponizes archaic wartime laws to serve political goals and undermines the very foundations of our democracy: civilian control of the military, judicial oversight, and constitutional protections.
This isn’t a theoretical concern. Alaska — and our nation — will feel the consequences. Our economy depends heavily on tourism and trade. Alaska’s global reputation as a rugged, open, and welcoming place will suffer if America is seen as sliding into authoritarianism. Why would international visitors, investors, or students come to a country that detains people in Guantanamo and deploys troops against its own people?
And make no mistake — this plan is not about border security. It’s about power.
President Trump is laying the legal and narrative groundwork to use the Insurrection Act to suppress dissent and centralize authority. We’ve seen this playbook before: casting immigrants as threats, labeling cities as lawless, and using “invasion” language to justify extraordinary actions. But rounding up immigrants with the military is not just unprecedented — it’s unthinkable in a democracy.
I ask you to speak out — now — and do everything in your power to block these plans. Challenge them publicly. Introduce legislation to limit or clarify the Insurrection Act. Demand transparency around the April 20 report from DHS and the Department of Defense. Do not let silence become complicity.
America is not a dictatorship. Let’s make sure it stays that way.
Thank you for your service and your courage in these uncertain times.
