I am writing to express grave concern regarding the documented lack of transparency concerning the true fiscal cost of the ongoing war in Iran. While the administration has publicly stated the cost is approximately $25 billion, internal assessments and high-level officials have confirmed the actual expenditure has exceeded $50 billion.
This $25 billion discrepancy represents a profound failure of institutional competency and an obstruction of the Power of the Purse vested in Congress under Article I of the Constitution. By providing minimized estimates that exclude the replacement costs of destroyed assets and damaged infrastructure, the executive branch is preventing the people’s representatives from performing their essential oversight duties.
Furthermore, I am alarmed by reports that the administration seeks to bypass the War Powers Resolution of 1973 by simply renaming military operations. Under established law, rebranding an ongoing conflict does not alter the statutory requirement for congressional authorization once the 60-day deadline has passed. To allow this maneuver is to accept a collapse of the separation of powers.
I urge you to fulfill your constitutional duty by:
1. Demanding a full, public audit of all expenditures related to the war in Iran, including asset replacement and infrastructure repair.
2. Rejecting any attempts to restart the clock on the War Powers Act through the renaming of military operations.
3. Demanding a public briefing where the administration must reconcile its public claims with verified internal data.
I will be monitoring your actions on this issue as a measure of your commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law.
