Support the John Lewis Voting Rights Act

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Springfield, MO

May 12

I am a Missouri constituent writing to urge you to support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S. 2523). The Supreme Court's recent ruling in Louisiana v. Callais has gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and made it nearly impossible to challenge maps that dilute minority voting power. Combined with Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, the Court has systematically dismantled the federal protections that Congress built to guarantee fair elections. The John Lewis Act would restore those protections. It would bring back preclearance for states with a documented history of voting rights violations and strengthen the tools voters need to fight discrimination at the polls. Congress created the Voting Rights Act. It is Congress's job to defend it. I urge you to cosponsor and support S. 2523.
