I am writing as a Kansas constituent to express my deep disappointment in your vote to continue funding the Department of Homeland Security without meaningful revisions or safeguards, despite DHS’s ongoing violations of democratic norms and due process. Over the past months, DHS agencies—particularly ICE and CBP—have repeatedly demonstrated disregard for basic constitutional principles. Masked agents, lack of identification, the use of lethal force against American citizens, and the erosion of due process are not isolated incidents. They reflect a systemic problem that Congress has a responsibility to confront, not enable. Continuing to fund DHS as-is sends a troubling message: that violations of due process, lack of accountability, and executive overreach are acceptable so long as they are politically inconvenient to challenge. That position is incompatible with the oath you took to uphold the Constitution. Funding is one of Congress’s most powerful tools for oversight, and choosing not to use it in this moment is a choice with real consequences. I have written to you multiple times urging action rather than statements, accountability rather than assurances. This vote was an opportunity to put constitutional principles ahead of party and inertia. I am disappointed that you did not take it. I urge you to reconsider your approach going forward: no additional funding for DHS without enforceable guardrails, transparent investigations into abuses, and clear consequences for violations of due process. Our democracy depends on leaders who are willing to draw that line.
