An Open Letter

To: Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. King, Gov. Abbott, Rep. Olcott

From: A constituent in Palo Pinto, TX

March 12

The proposed bill in the Texas legislature to criminalize what is termed "gender identity fraud" is an alarming overreach that threatens the rights and well-being of transgender individuals. This legislation would essentially prohibit transgender Texans from openly expressing their true gender identity to employers, government entities, and others, under threat of felony charges. Such a law would foster an environment of fear, discrimination, and marginalization for an already vulnerable community. Transgender individuals deserve to live authentically and free from persecution based on their gender identity. Criminalizing self-expression and imposing legal penalties for simply being oneself is a violation of fundamental human rights and civil liberties. This bill perpetuates harmful stigma and serves no legitimate public interest. Rather than advancing discriminatory policies, lawmakers should prioritize initiatives that promote inclusivity, respect for diversity, and equal protection under the law for all citizens, regardless of gender identity or expression. I urge you to oppose this misguided legislation and uphold the principles of equality and human dignity for all Texans.
