Demand for Congressional Action Against Executive Overreach

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Rep. Crank, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Monument, CO

September 6, 2025

I am writing to express grave concern over President Trump’s recent actions that have dangerously expanded executive power without Congressional approval. The failure of Congress to respond to these overreaches is a dereliction of duty. If the legislative branch refuses to uphold the Constitution, it renders itself irrelevant. Democracy cannot survive when one branch of government refuses to act as a check on the others. Below is a partial list of actions Trump has taken during his second term without Congressional authorization, undermining the balance of powers: ⚠️ Unilateral Actions Taken by President Trump (Second Term) Deployed National Guard troops to U.S. cities (including Baltimore and Chicago) to conduct police functions like arrests and crowd control—without consent from local authorities or Congress, violating constitutional limits. Abolished federal diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs via executive order—gutting civil rights infrastructure without legislative input. Declared English the official U.S. language through executive order—an act requiring legislation, not executive fiat. Banned gender-affirming care for minors by tying federal funds to compliance—bypassing Congress entirely. Reinstated a ban on transgender military service, reversing prior policy by executive order without military or legislative consultation. Cut funding for NPR and PBS by directing agencies to terminate support, despite funding being determined by Congress under the Public Broadcasting Act. Rebranded the Department of Defense as the "Department of War", altering the identity of a major federal agency by executive order—something that should require Congressional action. Expanded emergency powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enact trade measures and domestic policy initiatives without Congressional approval. Ordered a military strike on a suspected drug vessel near Venezuela without informing or seeking authorization from Congress, raising serious war powers concerns. These actions are not just controversial—they are unconstitutional. They demonstrate a pattern of authoritarianism that threatens the very system of checks and balances our government was built on. Congress’s failure to act makes it complicit. Silence is not neutrality—it is consent. I urge you to take your constitutional responsibilities seriously. This is a moment for courage, not complacency. Whether through legislation, oversight, or the use of impeachment powers, Congress must act to defend the rule of law and reassert its role in our democracy.
