I am writing as your constituent to express my strong opposition to National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7) and to demand its immediate repeal. This memorandum poses a significant threat to our fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly those enshrined in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The First Amendment guarantees our rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. NSPM-7 undermines these essential freedoms by designating surveillance of individuals/organizations with "anti-capitalist", "anti-American", and "anti-Christian" beliefs as "domestic terrorism". In a democratic society, it is imperative that citizens can freely express their opinions, engage in open dialogue, and organize without fear of government retribution or censorship. The implications of NSPM-7 extend beyond "national security", they represent a broader trend toward increased government surveillance and control over the lives of ordinary citizens. This is not only a violation of our constitutional rights but also a dangerous precedent that could lead to further erosions of our civil liberties. This order drums up memories of post-911 America, COINTELPRO surveillance of civil rights groups, McCarthyism and the Red Scare, and other such examples of government persecution of left-wing beliefs and working class organization. This comes at a time where President Trump and his administration are shifting the country towards authoritarianism and fascist tendencies. I urge you to take a stand for the rights of your constituents and the principles upon which our nation was founded. Repealing NSPM-7 is a crucial step in reaffirming our commitment to the First Amendment and ensuring that our democracy remains vibrant and resilient.
