Block the $400M Gift Jet to Trump

To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Joyce, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Concord Township, OH

May 15, 2025

I’m writing as your constituent to express deep concern over the reported $400 million “gift” of a luxury private jet from the government of Qatar to former President Donald Trump. This is not just a violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause — it’s a grave national security risk. The Emoluments Clause prohibits any President from accepting gifts, payments, or anything of value from a foreign government without the explicit consent of Congress. This massive private jet — from a regime with documented ties to terrorist groups like Hamas and extensive financial entanglements with Donald Trump’s business empire — is a textbook example of the kind of foreign corruption our Founders sought to prevent. Worse still, this is not just a constitutional issue. It is a counterintelligence nightmare. National security experts have already warned that such a plane, gifted by a foreign government, would be impossible to fully secure. Any number of surveillance tools, listening devices, or access points could be embedded beyond detection — effectively giving a hostile actor access to the communications and movements of a former (and potentially future) U.S. Commander-in-Chief. This gift creates an impossible conflict of interest. Trump has financial ties in Qatar worth billions. If he accepts this jet, how could the American people ever trust that his foreign policy decisions — now or in a future term — are made in their interest and not Qatar’s? This is unacceptable. I urge you to take immediate action: Publicly denounce the proposed jet transfer as a violation of the Constitution and a threat to U.S. sovereignty. Launch a congressional investigation into the full scope of this attempted emolument and any other foreign gifts or entanglements tied to Donald Trump. Introduce or support legislation to prevent any former or current U.S. official from accepting transportation or security-sensitive gifts from foreign governments. The American people deserve to know that our leaders serve us, not foreign interests. We are watching — and we expect Congress to defend the Constitution and our national security.
