Immediate investigation of DOD classification of scouting in America

To: Rep. Jayapal

From: A verified voter in Shoreline, WA

November 26

I am writing to you as a constituent, a lifelong Scout, an Eagle Scout, a member of the Order of the Arrow, a Scoutmaster for a troop in Seattle, and a parent of both a Boy Scout and a Girl Scout who are thriving in Scouting America. I am deeply concerned by the Department of Defense’s recent decision—reportedly supported by Secretary Pete Hegseth—to classify Scouting America as a national security concern following the organization’s inclusive shift to welcome girls into the program. This designation is profoundly troubling, not only for what it suggests about a respected century-old institution, but for the message it sends to the youth who participate in and benefit from this program. Scouting America develops civic-minded young people who grow into leaders of character. Many become Eagle Scouts; many go on to serve honorably in our Armed Forces; many grow into adults who strengthen our communities, our democratic institutions, and our national resilience. To imply that such a program poses a threat to national security is wholly inconsistent with its mission, vision, and values. As a Scoutmaster, I work directly with these young people every week. If I asked any of them whether they see themselves as a danger to this nation, I would receive an overwhelming—and heartfelt—“no.” My troop regularly honors veterans, conducts flag ceremonies, and instills an appreciation for service and sacrifice. Scouting is a vital part of American culture, shaping responsible citizens who understand duty, patriotism, and service to others. This classification harms the reputation of an organization that has, for generations, partnered closely with the U.S. military, supported military families, and helped produce countless service members, officers, commanders, and public servants. It also risks misleading the public and undermining a program that strengthens—not threatens—our national fabric. I respectfully request that your office: 1. Seek clarification from the Department of Defense regarding the justification, evidence, and intent behind this classification; 2. Advocate for an immediate reconsideration of any designation that categorizes Scouting America as a national security concern; and 3. Affirm publicly that youth-serving organizations dedicated to character, service, and leadership development are assets to our nation, not liabilities. Our young people deserve confidence in the institutions that shape them. They deserve support, not suspicion, from the government they are being taught to serve. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued service to our community and nation. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this issue further.
