Investigate Meta's Targeted Takedowns of Political Organizing Accounts

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

October 18

Investigate Meta immediately for its pattern of suspending accounts tied to political resistance and organizing. During the "No Kings" coalition's nationwide day of action, Meta pulled down the group's main Instagram page without warning at the peak of mobilization. That is not a coincidence. That is suppression. Meta's spokesperson claimed the account was disabled "in error" after automated spam filters flagged high-frequency posting. But this explanation keeps appearing for accounts that share one thing in common: opposition to the current administration. When the same "error" targets the same kind of speech, it stops being an error. A full investigation must examine whether Meta is coordinating, formally or informally, to limit the reach of political organizing. Free access to information is not negotiable in a democracy. Every day this goes uninvestigated is another day these platforms operate as tools of political censorship with zero accountability. The ballot box is the last word here, and constituents are watching who acts and who looks away.
