Support State Legal Action Against Unconstitutional Tariffs

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Arnold, MD

February 21

I am writing to urge you to support legal action against the federal government regarding the recently imposed tariffs that the Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional and illegal. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has already taken decisive action by sending the administration an invoice for $8,679,261,600, representing $1,700 per household for 5,105,448 households affected by these illegal tariffs. The Supreme Court's ruling confirms what many of us have known: these emergency tariffs were implemented without proper legal authority and have caused significant financial harm to American families and businesses. Every state affected by these unconstitutional actions should follow Illinois' example and pursue legal remedies to recover the costs imposed on their residents. These tariffs have functioned as an illegal tax on consumers, raising prices on everyday goods and creating economic uncertainty for businesses trying to plan for the future. The financial burden has fallen disproportionately on working families who can least afford increased costs for essential items. While companies that paid these tariffs will likely sue to recover their payments, ordinary consumers who absorbed these costs through higher prices have no such recourse unless states act on their behalf. I urge you to advocate for our state to join Illinois in holding the federal government accountable for these unconstitutional actions. This is not merely about recovering funds, it is about establishing that no administration can impose illegal financial burdens on American families without consequence. States have both the standing and the responsibility to protect their residents from federal overreach. Please support legal action to recover the costs our state's residents have borne due to these illegal tariffs and work to ensure such unconstitutional measures cannot be imposed again without proper legal authority.
