Defend disability rights: Uphold Section 504 protections

To: Rep. Wiedower, Gov. Kemp, Sen. Ginn

From: A constituent in Athens, GA

February 12, 2025

The lawsuit, Texas v. Becerra, poses a grave threat to the civil rights and equal access enshrined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. For over four decades, Section 504 has provided crucial protections against discrimination for individuals with disabilities, ensuring their full participation in education, healthcare, and public services. The updated regulations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services safeguard these rights by mandating accommodations like sign language interpreters, captioning, and accessible medical equipment. Dismantling Section 504, as this lawsuit seeks, would strip away hard-won progress and enable widespread discrimination against the disability community. As a matter of fundamental human rights and equal opportunity, we must defend Section 504 and its updated regulations to protect the dignity and well-being of millions of Americans with disabilities, particularly vulnerable students who rely on these accommodations to access their education. Preserving Section 504 is a moral imperative to create a more just and inclusive society.
