Your silence is an abdication of your oath
To: Sen. Banks, Sen. Young, Rep. Messmer
From: A constituent in Huntingburg, IN
January 24
It is now beyond urgent. Federal immigration enforcement operations in our cities have resulted in multiple deaths of U.S. citizens. This tragedy has been compounded by subsequent shootings involving federal agents in Minneapolis, including a 37-year-old lawful gun-owning resident identified as Alex Pretti on January 24, 2026, marking at least three separate fatal use-of-force incidents in that community this month. These are not isolated anomalies or lawful engagements with violent criminals. They are violent confrontations in broad daylight that have torn at the fabric of public trust, inflamed community tensions, and ignited widespread protest. Local and state leaders — including Minneapolis officials and the governor of Minnesota — have called for an end to these federal deployments and demanded accountability. ICE and other federal agents are carrying out enforcement with lethal force that far exceeds any reasonable justification. The continuation of these operations in their present form is incompatible with constitutional protections, public safety, and the duties of the federal government. Therefore, I demand the following: Abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency, in its current structure, mandate, and culture, has repeatedly demonstrated that it cannot operate within the rule of law or with respect for constitutional rights. Its history of disproportionately violent actions has eroded any claim of legitimacy in our communities. Immediately halt all aggressive federal immigration enforcement deployments that result in armed engagements in civilian environments. Continued authorization of these operations signals tacit approval for the loss of American lives and the suppression of constitutional protections. Support the creation of a new immigration enforcement body, with clearly defined guardrails, strict oversight, accountability mechanisms, and respect for individual rights. If the United States is to maintain border integrity and enforce immigration law, it must do so transparently, judiciously, and in strict accordance with constitutional standards. Every day that ICE continues to operate without reform or restraint, members of Congress who authorize, fund, or fail to check these actions share responsibility for the consequences. Silence or inaction in the face of repeated civilian deaths is an abdication of your oath to uphold the Constitution. It is unacceptable. Accountability is not optional; it is fundamental.
