Do not support HR22 (SAVE Act)

To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A verified voter in Frisco, TX

April 11

Do not support the SAVE Act. H.R. 22 (SAVE Act) has the potential to disenfranchise the majority of married U.S. women. 80% of American women change their last name when they get married, whether they completely change to use their spouse’s name or they hyphenate their maiden and married names. It is unconscionable that there is no exception in the legislation for people who’ve changed their last names due to marriage. The SAVE Act would require married women to jump through unnecessary hoops in order to exercise their right to vote. The majority of Americans don’t have passports and getting a passport is expensive. As for the other option to prove citizenship: I’d never even heard of changing your birth certificate to reflect a last name that changed due to marriage and I doubt very many other people have either. This legislation, as written, is intended to harm the voting rights of women. If the SAVE Act passes, it’s proof that the GOP hates women. These are not “hypothetical” situations to married women like me. Do not support H.R. 22.
