I am writing to express deep concern regarding recent reporting on Pentagon leadership, particularly the conduct and policy direction of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Recent coverage describes an extraordinary address to senior military leadership in which Secretary Hegseth disparaged generals, dismissed long standing policies on equal opportunity and conduct, and proposed sweeping changes that appear driven more by ideology than by military readiness or merit. The reporting outlines rhetoric targeting diversity initiatives, the rollback of complaint protections, and even suggestions that physical intimidation could be reintroduced into training environments. These are not minor adjustments. They represent a fundamental shift in the culture and governance of the United States military. Equally troubling is the removal of experienced military leaders and the apparent prioritization of loyalty over expertise. A strong military depends on professionalism, discipline, and respect for institutional norms, not political theatrics or inflammatory rhetoric. At a time of global instability, including rising tensions in the Middle East, the United States cannot afford erratic or divisive leadership at the Department of Defense. Our allies are already showing hesitation in cooperating with U.S. actions, underscoring the real world consequences of instability at the top. I strongly urge you to take immediate and serious oversight action. Those foundations must not be compromised. I expect you to act in defense of both our national security and the integrity of the armed forces. Our exceptional and impressive servicemen and servicewomen deserve nothing less and depend on it for their safety.
