July 22, 2025 Urgent Call for Enhanced Sanctions Against Russia to Halt Its Aggression in Ukraine I am writing as a concerned citizen to urge the United States government to take decisive action by imposing enhanced and immediate sanctions on the Russian Federation in response to its continued acts of violence, war crimes, and aggression against Ukraine. More than two years into this unprovoked and brutal invasion, Russia continues to flagrantly violate international law and the sovereignty of an independent nation. Cities have been leveled, civilian infrastructure has been targeted, and countless innocent lives—many of them children—have been lost or shattered. This is not just a war or unrestrained territory theft on Russia’s part; it is an assault on the international rules-based order, democratic values, and basic human decency. Sanctions already in place have shown that targeted financial and economic measures can weaken the Kremlin’s ability to wage war. But they must go further. Russia has adapted to current sanctions through illicit networks, support from authoritarian regimes, and continued profits from energy exports. The United States must lead a coordinated effort to: Fully cut off Russian banks from the global financial system, including the remaining access points to SWIFT. Expand secondary sanctions on entities and countries helping Russia evade sanctions. Severely restrict Russian energy exports, particularly oil and natural gas, while increasing global support for alternatives. Target key industries fueling the war, including mining, metals, and defense technologies. Sanction individuals and entities involved in propaganda, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns. These actions are not just about punishment—they are about prevention. Without stronger financial and diplomatic consequences, Russia has no incentive to stop its campaign of terror. History teaches us that unchecked aggression only emboldens authoritarian leaders. Moreover, the world is watching. Democracies must act in unity to ensure that borders cannot be redrawn by brute force. The Ukrainian people are fighting valiantly not only for their country, but for the principles of freedom and sovereignty we hold dear. They deserve our full and unyielding support. I respectfully urge you to take immediate steps to impose stronger sanctions and to rally international partners to do the same. The cost of inaction is too high—not just for Ukraine, but for the future of global peace and security. Demonstrate leadership and your commitment to justice through action.
