I am writing to urge you to oppose House Bill 4018, which seeks to delay and weaken the campaign finance reforms passed in 2024. The League of Women Voters of Oregon has denounced this legislation as a "complete betrayal" of the progress we made toward transparency and accountability in our elections. Oregon voters have long demanded stronger campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of big money in politics and ensure that everyday citizens have a meaningful voice in our democracy. The 2024 campaign finance bill represented hard-won progress after years of advocacy. House Bill 4018 would undermine these reforms before they even take full effect, rolling back protections that Oregonians fought to establish. Delaying implementation and changing key provisions of the 2024 law serves only those who benefit from unlimited spending and lack of transparency. This bill prioritizes special interests over the public interest. When we weaken campaign finance rules, we make it easier for wealthy donors and corporations to drown out the voices of ordinary constituents who cannot write large checks to campaigns. Strong campaign finance laws are essential to maintaining public trust in our democratic institutions. Oregonians deserve to know who is funding political campaigns and to have confidence that their elected officials are accountable to voters, not to the highest bidder. The 2024 reforms were carefully crafted to address real problems in our electoral system, and they deserve the chance to work as intended. I urge you to stand with Oregon voters and oppose House Bill 4018. Please protect the campaign finance reforms we worked so hard to achieve and reject this attempt to roll back transparency and accountability in our elections.
