Support the WISE Act to protect survivors of domestic violence

To: Sen. Coons, Sen. Blunt Rochester

From: A constituent in Newark, DE

August 11, 2025

I’m writing to urge you to support the Women Immigrants Safe Employment (WISE) Act, a vital piece of legislation that strengthens protections for immigrant survivors of domestic violence and other serious crimes. The WISE Act addresses critical shortcomings in the current U Visa program, which was designed by Congress to offer safety and stability to survivors who assist law enforcement. Unfortunately, the program is now plagued by egregious delays and a restrictive visa cap that leaves thousands of eligible survivors in limbo and exposed to further violence, manipulation, and trauma. By lifting the U Visa cap, the WISE Act would reduce the multi-year backlog and ensure that every eligible survivor has a fair and timely opportunity to access the relief Congress intended. This is not just a matter of immigration policy, but a matter of human dignity and public safety. Abusers often weaponize immigration status, using threats of deportation to silence and control their victims. The WISE Act would prevent detention and deportation of survivors with pending cases, helping to break this cycle of abuse. Moreover, the bill recognizes that economic independence is essential for survivors seeking to rebuild their lives. It mandates the issuance of work authorization within 180 days of filing, allowing survivors to support themselves and their families. It also ensures access to critical public benefits like housing, healthcare, food, and childcare assistance so that survivors can pursue safety and stability without fear. Finally, the WISE Act places limits on immigration enforcement in protected areas such as health care facilities, domestic violence shelters, courthouses, and places of worship, the spaces where survivors seek refuge and support. I believe this legislation reflects our shared values of compassion, justice, and protection for the vulnerable. I respectfully urge you to co-sponsor and advocate for the swift passage of the WISE Act.
