An Open Letter
To: Sen. Schmitt
From: A constituent in Plattsburg, MO
February 28
I recently received an email from you regarding the SAVE Act. You stated in part, “Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding illegal immigrants voting in our country’s elections. Input from constituents significantly informs my decision-making and empowers me to better represent the state. Recently, there have been concerns about the rise of illegal immigration and its undermining of the democratic process and census apportionment.” The statement you make that “there have been concerns” is a hand-waving move with NO evidence. You are simply trying to stir up fear and blame certain people. In case you WANT to read FACTS about voting, see this link on noncitizen voting facts from the Brennan Center, https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/noncitizen-voting-already-illegal-and-vanishingly-rare, which summarizes an exhaustive review of 42 jurisdictions and of election officials in those places, who oversaw the tabulation of 23.5 million votes. The article states, “of 23.5 million votes, referred only an estimated 30 incidents of suspected noncitizen voting for further investigation or prosecution. In other words, even suspected — not proven — noncitizen votes accounted for just 0.0001 percent of the votes cast.” I want to KNOW just HOW MANY illegal votes were cast in MO in the last 20 years, or whatever you have data for to PROVE your “concerns”. I expect an answer.
