Demand Congressional Action to Stop Unauthorized Military Operations in Iran

March 7

I am writing to demand immediate congressional action to stop the unauthorized military operations in Iran that began on February 28th when Trump partnered with Israel to launch major combat operations resulting in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. This military action was taken without congressional authorization, in direct violation of Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, which grants Congress sole authority to declare war. The conflict has already resulted in hundreds of deaths from airstrikes in Iran and surrounding countries, the torpedoing of over twenty Iranian ships in international waters, the use of new forms of AI warfare, and deaths of US service members. Trump has continually changed his rationale for the attack while he and his cabinet members have openly referred to these operations as a "war." Despite this, both chambers of Congress voted down resolutions that would have reaffirmed Congress's constitutional authority to declare war. Trump has provided no clear end date or plan for moving forward, only claiming he will do "whatever it takes." Experts fear this ill-defined rationale will lead to another forever war. Lawmakers anticipate Trump will soon seek emergency funding for military operations despite billions already spent and devastating domestic budget cuts to programs that serve your constituents. I urge you to take four specific actions. First, introduce and vote on another war powers resolution to exert Congress's constitutional authority over military conflict. Second, conduct aggressive oversight with public hearings on the Trump administration's actions in Iran. Third, refuse to pass any supplemental funding for this unauthorized military action. Fourth, support articles of impeachment and move to convict and remove Trump for his repeated defiance of the Constitution. Congress must fulfill its constitutional duty and stop this illegal war before more lives are lost and more taxpayer dollars are wasted on unauthorized military operations.
