Subject: Demand for Transparency and Accountability for Flock Safety Cameras
I am writing as a concerned resident regarding the rapid, undisclosed expansion of Flock Safety automated license plate readers (ALPR) in our community.
While these cameras are marketed as a tool for public safety, they are being installed with zero public notice or community input. I have observed an increase in these cameras alongside a frustrating lack of progress in solving local crimes. It is unacceptable that our movements are being tracked 24/7 while the "clearance rates" for actual crimes remain stagnant.
I urge you to support and strengthen SB 1111 to include the following:
- Mandatory Public Disclosure: Every camera location must be publicly disclosed on a searchable map.
- Stricter Retention Limits: Data should be purged within 24 hours if no crime has been reported.
- Proven Efficacy: We need annual, independent audits to prove these cameras are actually solving crimes, not just building a database of innocent citizens' daily routines.
Surveillance without transparency is not safety; it is overreach. I look forward to seeing you prioritize the privacy and actual security of your constituents over unvetted tech contracts.
