I am writing to urge you to oppose the dismantling of AmeriCorps programs in Alaska. As someone who worked for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska and helped bring AmeriCorps members into the community, I know firsthand the incredible value these individuals bring—not just for a year of service, but for a lifetime of community building.
The AmeriCorps program in Sitka—and across Alaska—has never been about politics. It’s about real people helping real communities. These AmeriCorps members lived on modest stipends, worked hard in our schools, nonprofits, and local agencies, and gave far more than they ever received. Many stayed after their service, raising families here, teaching our kids, and contributing to the future of our communities.
Cutting AmeriCorps is not an “America First” priority—it’s America Last. It weakens the very fabric of service, resilience, and hope that AmeriCorps represents. I don’t see a single upside to cutting this program. The decision to dismantle AmeriCorps under the so-called Department of Government Efficiency is shortsighted and reckless.
When you cut programs like AmeriCorps, you don’t just cut stipends—you cut teachers, mentors, youth leaders, and future business owners. You cut the future of small communities like Sitka, which have depended on this energy and commitment for decades.
Please stand up against these destructive cuts. Support AmeriCorps. Support Alaska.
